cannot resolve system env

When i try to run my launch.json

i get an error:

Failed to resolve env \"c:\\Program Files\\Python312\\python.exe\"

The output says:

2025-10-10 10:16:40.474 [debug] Extension ms-python.debugpy accessed resolveEnvironment with args: "\"c:\\Program Files\\Python312\\python.exe\""

From settings.json

"python-envs.defaultEnvManager": "ms-python.python:system",
"python-envs.pythonProjects": [],

Where are these args set? What could be the problem? Where does the leading backslash come from?

I believe it uses the interpreter set with Python : Select Interpreter. Whatever path is set there. This isn't handled by debugpy though. It's in the ms-python.debugpy extension at https://github.com/microsoft/vscode-python-debugger

python.defaultInterpreterPath was set wrong in settings.json in case someone has the same problem
