Grid cell mapping
For the mapping a dataset from the University of Edinburgh was used
which is freely available under
http://datashare.is.ed.ac.uk/handle/10283/2584 and contains the World
Political boundaries valid for 2014.
You can find the whole project description and work flow in the attached
pdf file. With that documentation you are able to fully reproduce the
mapping preparation.
The mapping itself contains the country code, the absolute area in
square kilometers and the relative filled area in percent for each cell.
The so-called “void” cells which do not really have an existing land
area (buoys? data acquisition errors?) became the country code “XNL”.
The cells 31627, 31628, 31817, 31818 and 32021 belong to Kosovo which is
only partially recognized state and should whether become the ISO code
of Serbia or the official ISO code of Kosovo (KOS?).
