This pull request introduces several improvements and updates across the codebase. The most significant changes are focused on improving the robustness of the .NET tool manifest detection logic, updating dependencies, and ensuring compatibility with the latest Node.js and npm registry configurations. Additionally, the PR enhances test coverage for new behaviors and updates build scripts for better reliability.

Key changes include:

Tool Manifest Detection & Acquisition Robustness

  • Introduced a new toolManifestExists utility to robustly detect the presence of a .NET tool manifest in both .config and root directories, and updated the acquisition logic to use this function, preventing unnecessary manifest creation and improving error handling. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
  • Enhanced tests to cover scenarios where the tool manifest exists in either location, ensuring correct acquisition behavior and preventing redundant operations. [1] [2] [3]

Dependency and Build Updates

  • Removed uuid and @types/uuid dependencies in favor of a custom UUID implementation, and updated related code to use the new approach. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]
  • Updated multiple dependencies to newer versions (e.g., mocha, rollup, webpack, requirejs, glob, tmp) across several package.json files for improved compatibility and security. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

Build and Registry Configuration

  • Changed npm registry configuration in .npmrc files to use the public npm registry (https://registry.npmjs.org/) instead of the Azure DevOps feed, simplifying package management.
  • Updated build scripts in package.json to ensure TypeScript compilation occurs before bundling and to use the correct input/output paths for rollup, improving the reliability of the build process.

Error Handling and Initialization

  • Improved error handling during extension activation by throwing a clear error if interactive launch options cannot be obtained, aiding troubleshooting.

Test Enhancements

  • Added tests to verify tool manifest detection in both .config and root directories, and to ensure cell output IDs are generated correctly when crypto.randomUUID is unavailable. [1] [2]

These changes collectively improve the reliability, maintainability, and developer experience of the project. Closes #9
