this PR aims to add support for a CuPy backend. CuPy is GPU only, and I currently don't have access to a GPU (nor does github CI), so this is currently untested and there might be some issues (likely: versioning/import issues, mypy issues, test issues)
(the PR is branched from #12, hence it includes all those commits)
